What Is VPS Hosting?
VPS hosting sits between shared hosting and a dedicated server. You get your own isolated virtual server with guaranteed resources, full root or administrator access and the freedom to install any software, at a price much closer to shared hosting than to dedicated hardware. With BlueVPS you can deploy a VPS in 20 locations across Europe, North America, Asia, Australia and the Middle East (USA, Germany, UK, Singapore and more) and manage it from the command line or with cPanel and other control panels.
Shared or VPS?
- Shared hosting places a large number of customers on one server, and all of them compete for the same CPU, memory and disk.
- Each account gets only a small slice of resources, and the activity of other users affects your site: if one neighbour is hacked or overloaded, everyone on the server can feel it.
- The server itself may be powerful, but providers usually put hundreds of accounts on it.
If a website on the same server has a memory leak or takes 80% of the RAM, all other sites have to share the remaining 20%. An attack on a single website can cause problems for the whole server. The worst part is that it is unpredictable, so you cannot plan for it.
VPS Hosting
- A VPS also runs on a physical machine shared with other customers, but KVM virtualization gives every server its own dedicated CPU, RAM and storage, fully isolated from the neighbours.
- You can add memory, CPU cores and disk space as your project grows, and what other users do on the node does not affect your server.
- Better security: each VPS has its own operating system and kernel, and cases of escaping the hypervisor are extremely rare.
A VPS is also a great choice for WordPress. The resources are reserved for you, and you can tune the web server, PHP and caching for your site, so a WordPress site on a VPS with NVMe storage loads much faster than on typical shared hosting.
